The 20th Season of the Motor City Chain Gang League concluded at the Firefighter's Finale on October 10. Disc Golfers came out to league this year in record numbers. The club recorded our largest membership (133), highest average turnout (119), highest single day attendance (149), and highest turnout at the Finale tournament with 81 players.
While the shear numbers made for great competition in all the divisions, the graciousness and dedication of the players and the staff are what make this one of the best disc golf clubs in the country.
Two very special club members were officially recognized by the club this year for their outstanding contributions. Ron Put was recognized as Master Statistician for his role in handling the stats from 2004 through the 2009 season. Not only did this job entail entering the scores for more than 10,000 rounds of disc golf for hundreds of different disc golf players, Ron did an awesome job of automating the system of calculating averages, handicaps, and points and generating the forms to post on the web site, the bulletin board, and to use for league sign up. In addition, Ron has created the flyers for our tournaments for the last couple of years. Ron has been pushed into retirement by the current economic climate and will soon be moving away from the Motor City to enjoy life as a Grand Master. Best of luck Ron and Thanks so much!
Damon Evans, Co-Founder of the Motor City Chain Gang was officially recognized by the club as a Life Time Achievement Award Winner for his outstanding contribution to the Metro Detroit disc golf community over the last 20 years. Damon helped to get this club started and develop the critical mass of players and support staff required to keep it going for the long hall. At times, Damon has taken the lead in promoting disc golf in this area as part of the club, Nomad Disc Golf, and The Disc Golf Store. But even when not in the lead, Damon has constantly supported the club, local disc golf organizers, and our courses with his experience, hard work, and outgoing personality. While it seems that most players around here have been greeted by Damon at one time or another, whether you know him or not, everyone who has stepped up to a tee on our local courses should be grateful for his efforts. Damon was rewarded with a commemorative plaque and Crystal Z Buzzzs for everyone with a picture of Damon on it. Thanks Damon!
Thanks to the rest our 2009 Staff for their efforts to make this a fun and well run league. Most of these guys were never asked to get involved, they just saw an opportunity to help out, volunteered, made a commitment, and followed through with it. For that we are grateful to Richard Olson, Steve Brazel, Scott Burnham, Ryan Bauer, and Derick Steimel. Thanks also to Kurt Maty for his generous donations to the league. Finally, a thank you to Nick Rem who maintains our online website presence.
